Honor's Contract
The James Workman Middle School Honors Program is designed to prepare middle school students for the demands of advanced and AP high school courses. The guiding principles of our Honors Program are based on the expectation that all students can perform at rigorous academic levels, and that students should be continuously challenged to expand their knowledge and skills to the next level.
The emphasis with Honors courses is that the students make the commitment to the additional effort required; therefore, this is essentially a contract made by the child, with parental knowledge and support. Honors classes are characterized by:
Indicators of Honors Level Course Success (not all indicators will be present in all successful Honors students):
Students enrolled in the program, who decide they are not ready to make the commitment to the Honors program, can transfer to a core curriculum class during the 1st quarter of the school year. After that, all students’ progress will be monitored. If at any time a student is receiving failing (D or F) grades for more than 4 weeks, parent meetings will be requested to talk about the student’s continued placement in Honors. Students MUST be willing to maintain the following program commitments:

- Greater demands for analytical thinking, creativity, and problem solving
- Strong emphasis on writing
- A rapid pace
- Frequent, demanding homework and extracurricular reading
- Willingness to participate freely in classroom discussion and group projects
- Ability to read and work independently at or above grade level
Indicators of Honors Level Course Success (not all indicators will be present in all successful Honors students):
- Demonstrates interest/curiosity in the subject area.
- Previous attainment of prerequisite skills and vocabulary in the subject area.
- Motivation remains high in face of challenges. ( High frustration threshold)
- Reads above grade level.
- Engages in higher level critical thinking.
- Self-motivated, well-organized, and apt to work independently for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrates ability to self-advocate, seeks help and guidance when needed.
- Consistently completes and submits assignments on time.
- Actively participates in class activities and discussions with appropriate peer interactions.
- Extends learning by voluntarily going beyond the parameters of the assignment.
- Enjoys learning, and makes connections between subjects and with the larger world.
- Utilize time management skills in order to balance both academic and extracurricular requirements/activities.

- Attendance (Less than 5 days absent per trimester)
- All Assignments Completed On Time
- No D’s or F’s (Progress Report & Report Card)
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA (Progress Report & Report Card)
- Uphold Quality Citizenship
- Attend Lunch/After School tutoring to obtain, help, OR to complete makeup work
- Displays behavior befitting an Honor student, showing respect for teacher and peers.
